Unhygiene

Hygienic gloves. Their purpose is for...hygiene. Common sense dictates that if you are wearing a glove, touch food, touch money and once again touch food, your glove will no longer be hygienic. The French have somehow missed this basic common sense lesson.

I mean, I'm not talking about sneezing in food or coughing in your hand before serving a baguette. It's common knowledge that baguettes are immune to basic hygiene rules. Why else would so many people wonder around with merely a piece of paper to protect them?

But don't pretend to be hygienic when you're not. I mean, the fancy overpriced sandwich shop on the Grand' Place makes their employees wear gloves to make the sandwiches but then they use the same gloved hand to count your change. Come on?! If you're gonna do the hygiene thing, either hire people to only prepare the food or make them take their gloves off to touch my food! Or how 'bout some hand washing folks?! There is one place in Lille where they wash their hands before and after making a sandwich...

I am quite relieve to say that at Benoît, the most expensive chocolate place in Lille, the salespeople remove their glove before touching the money. Thank you. But I'd like to know how often they change those gloves.

That's it for today's rant...

I love it. It's a wonder the human race survived before the invention of rubber gloves and anti-bacterial everything.

If these folks weren't wearing the gloves, it's likely that no one would even think about hygiene being an issue.

p.s. - a good rant is good for the soul. Keep it up !

Ahh haaa haaa. Years ago, I asked for a baguette at a boulangerie in Paris. The guy reached for the baguette which subsequently dropped on the floor. He picked it up and put it under the counter and then reached up and to get another one and gave it to me. His son (or assistant) looked at him like he had lost his mind.

I related the story to my French friends and they all had a big laugh, because if I had been French he would have picked the baguette up off the floor and handed it to me.

I'm sure the next order for a baguette got the one under the counter from the floor.

LOL! I never really thought about that, but you're absolutely right!

I've been to the Subway sandwich shope in Lomme, and they are good about having someone else deal with the money rather than the gloved sandwich makers.

A little piece of America in France. I love it! ;o)
