I decided to make a red velvet cake for my friend's babyshower this weekend. They are beautiful cakes and I've always wanted an excuse to make one.
But who knew you needed 2 ounces of red food coloring. As I measured out the small container of red coloring I bought at the supermarket, I realized... only a 1/4 ounce. It cost me almost 2 euros (and I also have yellow and green that I don't know what to do with). Now do the math.
I really really wanted a red velvet cake but I'm not spending 16 euros on red food coloring. So it'll be pink. And no one will know since there is only one other American coming and she'll keep quiet about it. At least my friend is having a girl. Besides, the French would probably find a deep red cake pretty vile anyway.

I think you are better off with the pink. The full-on red cake might be an insurance risk. I mean... do you really want to know what all that red food coloring might do to your body. Ew. Maybe there is some sort of beet juice-cake. Hey, so it might not taste the same, but at least you would be sure that your intestines wouldn't glow in the dark.
PS: I think the babysitter idea was great... but I'm a little worried what might happen if this 50 year old guy starts harrassing female (or male) university students.
Hmmm...talk about your insurance risk.
Mum's the word. ;o)
Are you using Kiri for the icing?
Nope! I found real Philadelphia cream cheese...and have a carrot cake in the oven right now so I can use the rest of the frosting up.
