A day in Paris can make any bored-of-France-overtired-working-mom
expat-living-in-small-city fall in love with France again ...but it doesn't always include a good ole American hamburger.
On my friend B's suggestion, I explored Breakfast in America, an American diner in Paris. It had hamburgers, chili, pancakes, cheesecake, Dr. Pepper, a neon clock, shiny stools, and red vinyl booths. What it didn't have was the chince and loudmouth waitress named Flo. The hamburger wasn't bad - ok, fine, probably the best I've had since I've been in France (my own barbecued concoctions aside). But can you believe it was fries OR coleslaw? That's just so French. And next to me, as I taught Bo how to eat a hamburger ("Um, how do I eat this?", staring at the 5 inch thick burger), there were some businessmen eating chicken wings with knives and forks.
Ah well, I guess I can't complain about the fact that the diner was too clean or classy (dark wood walls for God sake!) but understandable at the same time. How many French peopl could you see sitting down to eat in a really shiny, neon lit, greasy place with fat loud servers?
I really miss the Park West.
PS I actually sat down long enough in the Place des Vosges to get a sunburn!

Fries or coleslaw, eh? Hilarious. And did you say Dr. Pepper?! I don't care if it does taste like cough syrup, it brings back memories of my childhood. And adolescence. And young adulthood. Dang it, I had to give it up when I moved to France. What a woman will do for love...
Well, at least they tried.
I hope you ordered a side of coleslaw.
I got a nice can of Dr. Pepper, a chili burger and fries. I'm not a huge coleslaw fan and we are in the land of French fries. Ok but nothing like nice steak fries
Sigh, if I had a dime for every burger... but I detest Dr. Pepper.
(You tell Roger you were just kidding! He's been through enough. I will hold myself together and wait for a "George" that reeks bashert.
That sounds like a pretty cool place! I'll have to go check it out next time I go to Paris. Whenever that will be!
Hey, I remember that show "Alice". That brings back some memories.
Kiss my grits !
I went to BIA last year and it was great fun. I find that living in France means French food all the time (no complaints here), and a good burger and fries can really hit the spot. Not the fast-food variety, mind you, but a good one, and BIA does it pretty well.
We also do our own burgers and fries at home from time to time. Yum !
