Whereas in the US, the seperation of church and state is more theoretical than anything (in God we trust, etc) in France, there is a real seperation (see the headscarf polemique). Thanks for the input.Rebhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15768568719894187436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35124868099611785.post-16200678996537598382009-06-17T21:50:36.929+02:002009-06-17T21:50:36.929+02:00About the freedom of religion thing, a French lawy...About the freedom of religion thing, a French lawyer once explained to me that in the States we express that freedom by allowing everything and in France they express it by acknowledging nothing. He said it better than that but essentially that for us it was freedom of and for them it was freedom from. Which I guess results in the much more literal separation of church and state in France than in the US. Which, I have to say, I really appreciate.Nicolehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13306228378745291912noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35124868099611785.post-57997872281065473192009-06-16T16:37:58.641+02:002009-06-16T16:37:58.641+02:00ok, makes sense. So why are Americans scared of freemasons and laugh at scientologists while the French revere the first and are terrified of the latter?Rebhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15768568719894187436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35124868099611785.post-78504552727399091012009-06-16T14:53:21.085+02:002009-06-16T14:53:21.085+02:00I think the French word "secte" is more ...I think the French word "secte" is more like "cult" in English, whereas we tend to use it just to mean "faction". Like Baptists are a sect of Christianity. So I always get very confused when people say they're going to "le culte" in France, I imagine mass suicides and brain washing.BlondeInFrancehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12931640652874076974noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35124868099611785.post-92085436528648864662009-06-16T14:39:01.055+02:002009-06-16T14:39:01.055+02:00Freemasonry isn't a religion, so it doesn'...Freemasonry isn't a religion, so it doesn't really belong on any "sect" spectrum: it's a fraternity, more comperable to the Greek-letter fraternities around American universities than anything. Only for grownups, and it's been around longer.jonnoreply@blogger.com
